Anodizing

What is anodizing?

Anodizing is an electrochemical process that converts the surface of aluminum into a hard oxide layer grown into the metal itself. The layer improves corrosion resistance and durability, and it seals color inside the metal rather than on top of it — the foundation for consistent color and premium decorative finishes. Anomatic patented the high-volume version of the process and has run it for 60+ years, at a scale of more than a billion units a year.

What is double anodization?

Two sequential anodizing passes on one part. The first builds and dyes the oxide layer; the second selectively adds a further layer, producing two-tone and deeper saturated colors impossible in a single pass.

Why choose anodized aluminum packaging?

Anodized aluminum brings real metal weight and cold-touch feel, color that cannot chip or peel because it lives inside the oxide layer, corrosion resistance, strong shelf presence and full recyclability. It is the construction leading beauty, personal care and fragrance brands specify when the package has to feel as premium as the formula.

Is anodized aluminum better than painted packaging?

For durability and recyclability, yes. Paint sits on top of a part and can chip, scratch or flake; anodized color is sealed inside an oxide layer grown into the metal, so the finish survives handling, humidity and years of use. And because anodizing adds no foreign coating, the part stays mono-material aluminum and recycles cleanly. Paint's advantage is hitting exact opaque colors on any substrate — anodizing trades that for depth, permanence and a real-metal read.

Is anodized aluminum safe for food and personal care products?

The anodized surface is aluminum oxide — a stable, inert, non-flaking layer, which is why anodized aluminum is widely used in cookware and in packaging for beauty, personal care and pharmaceutical products, including drug-contact components like MDI canisters produced under cGMP. Compliance is validated program by program against the specific regulation that applies to the product and market.

Metallization

What is vacuum metallization?

Vacuum metallization deposits a thin metal layer onto a molded resin part inside a vacuum chamber — Anomatic uses 3D sputtering. The result reads as polished metal at resin weight, on geometry aluminum forming cannot reach: undercuts, snap features and complex curves. It delivers premium metallic appearance in a wide range of colors and effects while keeping parts light and tooling investment lower.

Anodized aluminum or vacuum metallized resin?

Choose anodized aluminum for weight, durability and full recyclability. Choose metallized resin for complex geometry, lighter parts and lower tooling cost at the same visual quality.

Is metallized packaging recyclable?

The sputtered metal layer is a tiny fraction of the part's mass, so a metallized component is handled as its base resin in recycling; whether it is recycled in practice depends on the resin and the local stream, which is why mono-resin design matters. When the recycling claim is central to the program, all-aluminum anodized construction is the stronger choice — it recycles as a single material, without separation, indefinitely.

7 questions

Sustainability

How does anodizing impact sustainability?

Anodizing is one of the few premium finishes that adds nothing foreign to the package: the decorative layer is aluminum oxide, grown from the metal itself. That keeps the part mono-material and fully recyclable, and it works on recycled alloys up to 100% recycled content. Inside our plants, recycling-loop arrangements recover process acid and water and return them to the line.

What is the carbon footprint of anodized aluminum?

It depends almost entirely on the alloy. Against the industry-standard virgin ingot at 8.96 MT CO₂e per ton, our low-GHG high-pure alloy (hydroelectric smelting) runs 3.5 (−61%), HRC high-recycled runs 5.3 (−41%), and evercycle™ runs 1.0 — an 89% reduction. Sources: 2022 Novelis Sustainability Report, US EPA ReCon v5.0, Aluminum.org 2022 LCA Report.

How recyclable is anodized aluminum?

Fully and repeatedly — the anodized layer is aluminum oxide and simply rejoins the melt, so anodizing does not compromise the recycling stream. Aluminum recycling takes about 95% less energy than producing virgin metal, and roughly 75% of all aluminum ever produced is still in use today (source: The Aluminum Association).

What is evercycle™ aluminum?

evercycle™ is Anomatic's lowest-footprint alloy, developed with Novelis and certified by SCS Global Services at 100% recycled aluminum with 99% post-consumer content in production. It cuts greenhouse gas per ton by 89% against the industry-standard ingot while forming and anodizing like virgin metal, and finishes in satin and matte at medium brightness.

What sustainable packaging options does Anomatic offer?

A family of eco-alloys — evercycle™ at 100% recycled, HRC at 68% PCR, and a hydroelectric-smelted low-GHG alloy for high-brightness work — plus mono-material all-aluminum construction, refill-ready designs, and in-plant recovery loops for process acid, water and plastics. Every alloy carries published GHG-per-ton data so brands can put a number on the change.

What packaging solutions support circular economy goals?

Mono-material all-aluminum packages, because they recycle as one material without separation; high-PCR alloys like evercycle™ that put recovered metal back into premium use; and refillable formats where the durable anodized component stays with the consumer. The manufacturing side closes loops too — process acid, water and plastics are recovered and reused rather than entering the waste stream.

What packaging technologies reduce greenhouse gas emissions?

The biggest single lever is alloy choice: moving from industry-standard ingot to HRC cuts GHG per ton 41%, low-GHG hydroelectric-smelted metal cuts it 61%, and evercycle™ cuts it 89%. Beyond the metal, consolidating forming, anodizing, decoration and assembly under one supplier — and co-locating with fillers and molders at the New Albany campus — takes freight legs out of the supply chain.

Tooling & Development

What tooling lead time should I plan for?

Engineering review starts at concept. Rapid 3D prototypes come back in days; production tooling and first article timing depend on geometry and decoration, and we quote both up front.

Read the full answer

Does Anomatic manufacture tooling in-house?

Yes. The Tooling Center of Excellence in Naugatuck, Connecticut runs 91 presses and designs and builds the custom tooling behind every program onsite. An extensive tooling library of proven forms can shortcut development entirely when a stock geometry fits.

How long does custom cosmetic packaging development take?

Think of it as three clocks, not one. Rapid 3D prototypes answer the design questions in days. Production tooling for straightforward cylindrical parts can run in the 8-to-10-week range, while complex geometry and decoration are quoted at engineering review. First article approval then locks the color and dimensional standard before volume production begins — all three dates are quoted up front.

How does Anomatic help reduce time to market?

By removing handoffs. Design support, tooling, forming, molding, anodizing, metallization, decoration and assembly all run inside one supplier, so a program moves between steps without re-quoting, re-shipping or re-explaining. Engineering review at concept catches manufacturability issues while changes are still free, and the in-house tooling library can eliminate custom tool time altogether.

Materials

How much PCR content can aluminum packaging carry?

evercycle™ is certified at 100% recycled aluminum with 99% post-consumer content in production. Our HRC alloy runs 68% PCR. Both take satin and matte finishing at medium brightness.

Read the full answer

How much recycled content can cosmetic packaging contain?

In aluminum, up to 100%: evercycle™ is certified at 100% recycled content with 99% PCR and performs like virgin metal in forming and anodizing. The constraint is optical, not structural — recycled feedstock suits satin and matte finishes at medium brightness, while high-gloss bright work specifies the low-GHG high-pure alloy instead. Few other premium packaging materials reach those numbers without a performance penalty.

What is eco-alloy aluminum?

Eco-alloy is the family name for our reduced-footprint aluminum options: evercycle™ (100% recycled, −89% GHG per ton), HRC high-recycled (68% PCR, −41%), and low-GHG high-pure (virgin metal smelted with certified hydroelectric power, −61%, for high-brightness finishes). All three form and anodize like standard metal; the choice comes down to the finish family the design lives in and the footprint target.

Aluminum or Surlyn for premium packaging?

They solve different briefs. Surlyn is an ionomer resin prized for glass-like transparency, common on fragrance caps where the design calls for a clear or jewel-like read. Anodized aluminum brings real metal weight, cold touch, color that cannot chip, and single-material recyclability. If the concept needs transparency, Surlyn earns its place; if it needs permanence, tactility and the cleanest recycling story, aluminum does.

What are the benefits of aluminum caps and closures?

Weight and balance in the hand, a cold first touch that signals metal immediately, anodized color and finish that survive years of handling, and full recyclability at end of life. Formed and decorated at volume, aluminum caps hold tight dimensional tolerances and a color standard that stays consistent from first article to final pallet — which is why they anchor prestige fragrance and skincare programs.

3 questions

Decoration & Color

What decorative finishes are possible on aluminum packaging?

The anodized base itself ranges from high-gloss through satin to deep matte, in effectively unlimited color. On top of it, the decoration toolkit includes:

  • Double anodizing — two-tone effects and deeper saturation
  • Brushed and textured surfaces
  • Gradient and iridescent effects
  • Embossing and debossing
  • Laser engraving
  • Hot foil stamping
  • Screen printing
  • Lacquering
  • Metallization effects on resin components

How does color matching work in anodized aluminum?

A brand color target becomes an approved physical color standard — a real part, not a chip — and that standard gates first article. From there, production runs are held to ΔE ≤ 1.0, a variation below what the human eye can detect, and the same standard travels with the program between plants. Color can be developed across opacities, gloss levels and decorative effects.

Can Anomatic match my brand color?

Yes. 60+ years of anodizing has built deep experience reproducing brand colors in anodized aluminum and metallized finishes, across different opacities, gloss levels and effects. The match is proven on a physical standard you approve, then held at production scale to a tolerance tighter than the eye can see.

Packaging Design

What makes premium cosmetic packaging premium?

Weight and balance that feel deliberate in the hand, the cold touch of real metal, finish depth that reads under retail lighting, and consistency — every unit on the shelf indistinguishable from the standard. That last part is the hard one at volume: it takes color held to ΔE ≤ 1.0, tight dimensional tolerances and decoration registered against the same physical standard, a billion units a year.

Can anodized aluminum be used in luxury beauty packaging?

It is the default material of luxury beauty packaging. Prestige fragrance caps, skincare jar covers, lipstick components and compacts reach for anodized aluminum precisely because the color is grown into the metal, the part carries real weight, and effects like double anodizing and satin champagne finishes read unmistakably premium. Leading beauty brands have specified it for decades.

What is late-stage packaging differentiation?

A strategy that puts the differentiation at the end of the process instead of the beginning: shared, proven forms and tooling carry the program, and the SKU is defined late by anodize color, finish and decoration. Because a new colorway needs no new tool, brands can launch variants, seasonal editions and market-specific versions faster and at far lower cost than cutting fresh tooling per SKU.

How do brands move away from glass components like mirrors?

Weight, breakage and recyclability are pushing brands to rethink glass elements in compacts and closures. Vacuum metallization produces mirror-bright surfaces on light, shatter-resistant resin, and bright anodized aluminum delivers a reflective metal read in a mono-material construction. The transition is a qualification exercise — agreeing the visual standard, then proving it at production volume — and engineering review at concept is where it starts.

3 questions

Industry Expertise

What industries does Anomatic serve?

Beauty and personal care — cosmetics, skincare and fragrance — plus wine and spirits closures and pharmaceutical packaging, including MDI canisters and inhalation components. The common thread is programs where finish quality, color consistency and volume reliability decide whether the package supports the brand.

What makes Anomatic different from other packaging suppliers?

60+ years of anodizing, starting from the patent on the high-volume process itself; vertical integration from design and tooling through forming, anodizing, metallization, decoration and assembly; production scale past a billion units a year; a color discipline that holds ΔE ≤ 1.0 across six plants on two continents; and a sustainability position built on certified 100%-recycled aluminum rather than claims.

Can Anomatic support sustainable beauty packaging initiatives?

Yes — with materials and numbers, not just intent. The eco-alloy family reaches 100% recycled content certified by SCS Global Services, each alloy carries published GHG-per-ton figures for footprint accounting, mono-material construction keeps the recycling claim clean, and refill-ready designs extend package life. Sustainability goals are treated as a program requirement, engineered in from concept review.

2 questions

Regulatory & Compliance

What packaging materials support PPWR compliance?

The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation centers on recyclability at scale and minimum recycled content, with requirements phasing in over the coming years. Mono-material anodized aluminum is well positioned on both fronts: aluminum has an established, economically real recycling stream, anodizing adds no coating that needs separating, and recycled content runs as high as evercycle™'s certified 100%. Assessment is always per format and per market — that evaluation belongs in concept review.

What quality certifications and standards does Anomatic work to?

Manufacturing runs under ISO 9001 quality management and ISO 14001 environmental management, with pharmaceutical components such as MDI canisters produced under cGMP. Material claims are third-party certified — evercycle™ by SCS Global Services — and every program is governed by an approved first article and physical color standard that production is measured against.
